Afghan Opposition negotiating with Taliban and HIG

Reports of Afghan opposition politicians in talks with both Taliban and the Hezb-i Islami Gulbuddin (HIG) terrorist group with a view to forming a postwar government. (Should we call this a government of national unity? No, we’d better not.)

No doubt the increasingly erratic President Karzai is thrilled – if he’s not pulling the strings himself.

This is how insurgencies are won by the democratic west – negotiated outcomes. A Western democracy with unmatched military might at its disposal is only committed as far as the election cycle allows, whereas an insurgent who can not hope to meet the military might of the western democracy targets the western democracy with the only means available to him – time! Each side fights each other to a standstill then agrees to walk of the battlefield, each claiming victory!
