Colonel Riad al-Assad, a Syrian officer who defected to head the Free Syrian Army, has been seriously wounded and possibly killed in an apparent targeted assassination attempt. Colonel Assad’s car had an explosive device attached to it during a visit to the eastern Syrian town of Mayadeen.
The attack is unlikely to materially alter the Syrian situation because the FSA’s control over its disparate rebel elements is at best weak. It is unclear whether this attack was carried out by Syrian Government forces or the Colonel’s fellow rebels.
