Herald often thought the Chinese were laughing themselves silly as the West bogged down in Middle Eastern and Central Asian wars. So the news that Iraq is courting Chinese oil customers must be some sort of punchline.
The People’s Daily is reporting it like this:
“The Chinese companies are considered as strategic partners to Iraq in aspects of extracting and marketing crude oil through their active participation to develop the Iraqi oilfields,” the state-run Iraqia channel quoted Iraqi Oil Minister Abdul-Kareem al– Luaybi as saying.
Mmmm. Makes you glad to be a Westerner. Still, if Iraq is to be truly free it must be free even to turn its back on those who freed it. And Herald would rather be the naïve West than the cynical East, even at the price.
