March of The Chad

Mali: A contingent from The Chad is moving north to secure the town of Kidal against Islamist and Tuareg separatist forces. The move involves an old Soviet Antonov crewed by Serbians, which brings back memories of Herald’s younger days riding around Timor in a contracted Russian helicopter. It was a whole new approach to air travel. Herald imagines the Chadians feel the same way about it…

The Chadian force is seen as more acceptable locally than elements of the Malian Army, with its taint of human rights abuses. That will make for a difficult peace later on – Malian residents prefer foreign soldiers to their own. Is it The Chad?
